How to set up Windows 98 to access the Internet
Using the Windows 98 Internet Set Up Wizard
Since it appears there are several versions of Windows 98, it is difficult
to present an exact, step by step, method to
set up your system to access
the Internet.
If you have any trouble setting your system up, please give us a call for assistance
If, during this process, you are asked for your original Windows 98 CD or Diskettes,
insert them when
prompted. If you make a mistake, you may click on the back button
on each window to return to the previous
window.
If you have an Icon on your DeskTop labeled Connect to The Internet, double click it to
start the Internet Set Up
Wizard. If you do not have the Icon, then go to Start, Settings,
Control Panel, and double click the Icon labeled
Internet.
Select the tab labeled Connection. Click on Connect to start the Internet Connection Wizard.
Click on, I have an Existing Internet Account through my phone line. Next.
Click on Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet Service Provider,
or a local area
network. Next.
Set up your Internet Account, select Using my Phone Line. Next.
Select an Option - You are
accessing using an Internet Service Provider, not AOL or MSN. Next
Set up Internet Connection - Connect using my Phone Line. Next.
Phone Number - Input the correct area code and phone number for your location. Tulsa, OK
(918) 584-6137,
Wichita, KS (316) 337-0197, Panama, OK (918) 963-6388, Chebanse, IL
(815) 697-2650, and the 800 service is
(800) 423-4924. Use of the 800 number incurs a
surcharge of 11 cents per minute. Use of the 800 number
constitutes agreement to pay any charges.
Be sure that the box, Dial using the Country Code and Area Code, check
if needed. Next.
User Name and Password - Input your user name and password. These are usually all lower
case and have no
punctuation or spaces in them. Be sure to type your password carefully, as
it will be echoed back as asterisks.
Advanced Settings - You will not need to change these from the default. Select No, and Next.
Dial up Connection Name - We recommend you name the connection using the name of the city you
are dialing,
such as, Internet Connection - Tulsa.
Set up Your Internet Mail Account - Yes. Next.
Display Name - Input your real name as you wish it to appear on any Email you send. Next.
Internet Email Address - Input your Email address. It should be in the form username@intcon.net. Next.
Email Servers - The incoming server (pop3 server) is a pop3 type, and the name of the server is
pop3.intcon.net.
The outgoing server (smtp server) is smtp.intcon.net. Next.
Internet Mail Logon - Input your username and password. Do not check the box to use secure password
authentication. Next.
Friendly Name - You may use the default that is already filled in, or you may change it to something you
will
recognize, such as Internet Connection Email. Next.
Set up your Internet News Account - Yes. Next.
Display Name - Should already be filled in with your real name as you input earlier. Next.
Internet News Email Address - Should already be set up. Next.
Internet News Server Name - The main server is nntp.intcon.net. If you desire a more sanitized news server,
use
news1.intcon.net. This server does not have many of the X rated news groups and is better suited for
families with
children. Your server does not require you to log on. Next.
Friendly Name - You may use the default that is already filled in, or you may change it to something you will
recognize, such as Internet Connection News. Next.
Set up Your Internet Directory Service - Select No. Next.
Complete Configuration - Click Finish. Next.
We recommend that you set up our Web Page as the Home Page in your browser. To do this, got to Start,
Settings,
Control Panel, and double click Internet. Now select General, and under Home Page, where it asks
for an address,
change it to read http://www.intcon.net. Apply, and OK.
Now, to log on to the Internet, click on the Internet Explorer Icon on your desktop.
